Inspiring Conversations with Makayla Hoover & Amanda DeVaul of Bayou City Hangouts
Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Hoover & Amanda DeVaul
Hi MaKayla & Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Bayou City Hangouts began in June 2024, founded by college friends Amanda DeVaul and MaKayla Hoover. Before starting the business, they loved hosting parties and events like wine nights for their friends, which inspired them to take their passion to a professional level for others to enjoy. What began as a crazy idea quickly grew into something much bigger than they ever imagined.
Their journey started with Grocery Bingo at a local coffee shop, followed by a partnership that led them to organize markets there as well. Since their first market, they have showcased over 300 small business owners and built lasting collaborations with local businesses, breweries, DJs, and more. Many vendors joined them for their first market experience and have remained part of their journey ever since.
Through their events, they have found meaningful ways to connect with others and immerse themselves in the Houston community. As they continue to grow and thrive, they are actively searching for a permanent venue to call home.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was not always an easy road. There were hiccups and challenges, including managing vendor fees, securing venues, and finding reliable vendors. Along the way, there have been some unsuccessful markets and some truly amazing ones. They have had to overcome and navigate issues with the few unsatisfied vendors and find ways to streamline their process for accepting vendors. Through it all, they have gained valuable knowledge about marketing and are actively seeking partnerships with other event businesses.
Despite the obstacles, they deeply appreciate the loyalty and understanding of their vendors, who have supported them in ways they never could have imagined. To give back, they are on the hunt for unique ways to contribute to the community each month through their new volunteer group, *Impact*. They are also seeking helping hands from ambassadors to ensure they can respond more promptly and effectively to those they serve.
